Your thoughts, comments, and suggestions concerning Blues You Can Use show
So, the thought has come up here at detour BLUES concerning whether you, our listeners, like the idea of having a live broadcast where you can make requests or dedications and interact with the announcer (I’m talking about the Blues You Can Use show, heard M-F 1-5pm eastern)… or whether you would prefer the station to run automatically… selecting the songs to be played with no input from you. Your thoughts, comments, and suggestions would be deeply appreciated in this matter.

Hi,
I listen to your station daily …I’m not a tv watcher.
John Tibbs the only way I believe you got the DJ job was you are a relative of the owners. You constantly stumble when you are on air.Your annunciation and pronuncation are terrible.Too many times you forget to flip a switch when you are previewing a tune while one is playing on air.
For the most part you selection of tunes is good EXCEPT that damn “obama we shall overcome.” You exhibit poor taste playing that as obama flushes the USA down the toilet and allows our waters to be covered with oil! He has done nothing but,TALK!…and unfortunately you can’t even pull that off, well.
I would prefer automatic…not you!

John Drew,
John Tibbs is the station owner and operator. He is in charge of this whole thing. There is no “job” as he is a volunteer. Everyone and everything you hear on this station has been paid for out of pocket by just a few folks. We are not operating a professional, corporate sounding radio station. We are unprofessional and will make mistakes. But what sets us apart is that we have absolutely no affiliation with large corporate conglomerates, making us truly independent. We also have absolutely no commercials! I also think we have one of the most eclectic blues musical libraries out there.
We do appreciate the criticism and are always striving to make ourselves more professional…but I just hope you understand that this is a very small, volunteer operation. We do our best and have a good time doing it.
One goal in the detour network is to get away from stations operating on 24/7 automation. We invite anyone interested in doing a show to contact us at either blues@thedetour.us or vertical@thedetour.us … we will be glad to help you get on the air, no matter how unprofessional you are!

John Drew,
I do welcome your comments and suggestions. Criticism such as yours tells me of the things that I need to work on to make the show better. I admit, I am not a “professional” announcer… just a fan of the blues, such as yourself. I do this as an effort to help keep the blues alive! I am thankful for all of the artists and listeners that contribute to the station. I hope you have a wonderful day and will continue listening to the station, even if it isn’t to my show.

Christa,
Thanks for the comments concerning the live show. It would be nice to be able to run the station live 24/7, but alas… such is not the case. The idea behind the live show is to introduce new music and to allow the listeners the opportunity to request the songs that they are interested in hearing.

Here is an e-mail that I received concerning this post… just thought I’d re-post it here.
“Just read the comment on your website from JD. Holy crap John. I like the human feel of the station–right down to when you ain’t feelin’ so great and tell us out here–and especially knowing there is someone at the other end of the mouse on “Blues You Can Use”. Sometimes I send in a request but often I don’t because a) I am sitting here really enjoying the playlist you got going; and b) I have so much organizing to do in my job that I’m quite content to let someone else drive the train, especially someone who is doing it so well.
All that to say, thank you for the great blues John–and someone who can choose and play great blues is a professional DJ.”

I just tuned in for the first time earlier this evening, and I have been enjoying the eclectic playlist very much. I like that there are jazz, funk and other styles and influences mixed in with the more traditional blues. It appears to be recorded or canned rather than live, but I have no problem with that whatsoever. To me it’s all about the music. When I’m not listening to my own music library, I have most frequently listened to BellyUp4Blues, mostly in an effort to discover new artists, but their playlist can be too monotonous and too heavy on the rock emphasis at times, and the constant solicitations for donations gets tiresome as well.
Never mind the petty complaints from the small-minded, and keep up the great work. I am definitely a new listener, and I am intrigued by the idea and hope sometime in the future to see if I might be able to produce a recorded show for your listening audience.

Charlie… the station is automated a majority of the time, however I do a live broadcast weekdays from 1-5pm eastern. The show is called “Blues You Can Use” and you can make requests or dedications by either sending me an Instant Message or calling me on the studio lines. I also feature music by new and upcoming artists as well. If you get a chance, give the show a listen.
