About The Station

The original reason the station was created…

February 25^th, 2009: The station was originally created with the purpose of helping to keep the blues genre of music alive. You can’t map the development of today’s popular music without starting somewhere near rhythm and blues musicians like Muddy Waters or Howlin’ Wolf, who influenced the slew of skiffle bands in England that produced such legends as Eric Clapton or the Rolling Stones, who were followed by sound-bending greats, like Led Zeppelin or Jimi Hendrix, who influenced … well, you see the trend here. “The Blues (notice the caps) are not a formula, the Blues are about emotion, passion, and the spaces between the notes, if The Blues make you sad, you ain’t listenin’ right.”

By thinking about the intersections of whites, blacks, and others around the blues, our listeners will deepen their understanding of discrimination and prejudice. They will also come to understand the ways in which music can, or cannot, create opportunities for people of different cultures, and with varying degrees of power, to relate to one another and find common ground.

While the blues started as an African American music, it is now a music that has been embraced by people in different cultures, black and white, around the world.

Debates about whites playing the blues often include accusations that whites are “stealing” black music, as if whites and blacks exist in their own worlds, each with their own untouched and pure musical styles. However, American-music history contains numerous instances of musical acculturation or the adoption of the musical traits of one culture by another.

· new music first: detour BLUES plays NEW music first. Each week detour BLUES updates its playlist with brand new, never heard music! Many of the songs that you hear on regular FM stations were popular on detour BLUES 2 or 3 months ago. Most stations take as much as 2 to 3 months to get new music on the air, but detour BLUES beats them by getting it to you first!

· requests: If we have it, we will play it. If we don’t have it, we will try our best to find it! We also take dedications, and other special requests! Requesting a song is SIMPLE! Click here to go to request a song! Your request will be played approximately an hour after you request it, per DCMA regulations!

· live shows!: We will also feature live hosts that do their own shows. They play what they want.. what their listeners want. We give them total control to plan and produce their show as they see fit.
